The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced an ambitious plan to train 100,000 artisans across the country in 2025 as part of its efforts to revamp the economy through skill acquisition and empowerment. This initiative, known as the Skill Up Artisan Super (SUPA) programme, is spearheaded by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

*Objectives of the Programme*

Upgrade Skills to International Standards: The programme aims to elevate Nigerian artisans to compete globally by providing tech-driven training, official licensing, and access to essential toolkits, ensuring their skills meet international benchmarks.

Eradicate Quackery: A major goal is to eliminate substandard and unprofessional practices among artisans, promoting dignity in labour and ensuring that artisans gain financially from their craftsmanship rather than resorting to alternative means of livelihood.

Inclusive National Reach: The programme targets artisans from all regions and political affiliations, including barbers, tailors, automobile mechanics, electrical technicians, and others, making it a truly nationwide effort.

*Implementation and Progress*

In 2024, the programme successfully trained and upgraded 29,000 artisans and non-artisans, setting the foundation for the expanded 2025 target.

The ITF has opened registration for artisans to participate in various sectors such as building construction, fashion design, automotive, technology, agriculture, and agro-allied fields, with training offered free of charge and including certification and job placement opportunities.

The programme also involves collaboration with the Association of Nigerian Artisans and Technicians (ASNAT), which encourages artisans to embrace the training for personal and professional growth.

The Director-General of ITF, Mr. Afiz Ogun, emphasized that this is the first time in Nigeria’s history that artisans are receiving such focused attention from the presidency, highlighting President Tinubu’s commitment to workforce development and economic revitalization through skill empowerment.

The initiative is expected to transform Nigeria’s artisan sector by fostering professionalism, boosting economic productivity, and reducing unemployment through enhanced craftsmanship and formal recognition of artisans.

*How Artisans Can Participate*

Interested artisans can register for the programme through ITF offices nationwide or online, with training and certification provided at no cost.

The programme offers not only skill acquisition but also official licensing, which will help artisans establish credibility and compete fairly in the market.

This large-scale training initiative represents a strategic move by the Nigerian government to harness the potential of the artisan workforce, promote economic growth, and ensure that Nigerian artisans are recognized and respected both locally and internationally.
