President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called off the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 earlier scheduled for Thursday, 12 June.

The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation announced Wednesday in a statement.

The nationwide address was one of the activities lined up to mark Democracy Day.

The Director, Information & Public Relations, Office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Segun Imohiosen, said in the statement that the cancellation was because the President was also scheduled to attend the National Assembly Joint Session, the same day.

He said President Tinubu will deliver his address from the National Assembly.

According to the statement, all other plans remained in order as announced earlier.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced an ambitious plan to train 100,000 artisans across the country in 2025 as part of its efforts to revamp the economy through skill acquisition and empowerment. This initiative, known as the Skill Up Artisan Super (SUPA) programme, is spearheaded by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

*Objectives of the Programme*

Upgrade Skills to International Standards: The programme aims to elevate Nigerian artisans to compete globally by providing tech-driven training, official licensing, and access to essential toolkits, ensuring their skills meet international benchmarks.

Eradicate Quackery: A major goal is to eliminate substandard and unprofessional practices among artisans, promoting dignity in labour and ensuring that artisans gain financially from their craftsmanship rather than resorting to alternative means of livelihood.

Inclusive National Reach: The programme targets artisans from all regions and political affiliations, including barbers, tailors, automobile mechanics, electrical technicians, and others, making it a truly nationwide effort.

*Implementation and Progress*

In 2024, the programme successfully trained and upgraded 29,000 artisans and non-artisans, setting the foundation for the expanded 2025 target.

The ITF has opened registration for artisans to participate in various sectors such as building construction, fashion design, automotive, technology, agriculture, and agro-allied fields, with training offered free of charge and including certification and job placement opportunities.

The programme also involves collaboration with the Association of Nigerian Artisans and Technicians (ASNAT), which encourages artisans to embrace the training for personal and professional growth.

*Government Commitment and Impact*

The Director-General of ITF, Mr. Afiz Ogun, emphasized that this is the first time in Nigeria’s history that artisans are receiving such focused attention from the presidency, highlighting President Tinubu’s commitment to workforce development and economic revitalization through skill empowerment.

The initiative is expected to transform Nigeria’s artisan sector by fostering professionalism, boosting economic productivity, and reducing unemployment through enhanced craftsmanship and formal recognition of artisans.

*How Artisans Can Participate*

Interested artisans can register for the programme through ITF offices nationwide or online, with training and certification provided at no cost.

The programme offers not only skill acquisition but also official licensing, which will help artisans establish credibility and compete fairly in the market.

This large-scale training initiative represents a strategic move by the Nigerian government to harness the potential of the artisan workforce, promote economic growth, and ensure that Nigerian artisans are recognized and respected both locally and internationally.

President Tinubu Confers National Honour On Bill Gates, An Inspiration To Leaders

President Bola Tinubu said on Tuesday in Lagos that Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and chairman of the Bill Gates Foundation, inspires leaders worldwide by consistently lifting the poor and underprivileged.

The President, who conferred the national honour of the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Gates, noted the renowned philanthropist’s interventions in maternal health, agriculture and infectious disease research.

President Tinubu thanked Gates for providing global leadership that prioritises ameliorating the lives and safety of the poor and underprivileged.

“Today, I would like to share my happiness and respect and acknowledge one of the greatest human beings in the world.

“All I need to say is thank you, Bill Gates, for your indivisible commitment to humanity. It is highly remarkable. It is an inspiration to leaders across the world, including the one standing before you.

“I thank you very much. It is a great thing to honour you as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he added.

In his remarks, the Minister of Health and Social Development, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, said Mr Gates’s recognition was well deserved, considering his long-term involvement in Nigeria’s national development.

“Bill Gates’ friend, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has been working with him to transform lives across the country. From that time until now, the Gates Foundation and through other channels have invested more than $2 billion of its capital in various arenas that directly affect our people, whether in health care, agriculture, or the digital economy.

“Importantly, when he came into Northern Nigeria, there were challenges with immunisation, people refusing because of ignorance, and with Mr Gates and Alhaji Aliko, they mobilised the entire traditional ruler’s committee,” he stated.

Pate said the strong support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation eradicated polio.

Bill Gates said he was honoured by the conferment of the CFR by the President.

“I am very happy to receive the honour for myself and the incredible team at the Foundation. From the beginning, the Foundation’s goal was to support improving Nigeria’s health sector.

“Nigeria had some ambitious goals for improving health, and three people here today are great champions of that cause. Of course, the President is making health a priority. Pate, we’ve worked together to handle great challenges, including the incredible progress on polio.

“Then, Dangote, I got to know, and we have done great work together. So, in the 25 years in Nigeria, we have achieved a lot. As was mentioned, the child death rate has gone down, and that’s because new vaccines were received to boost our efforts.

“Much work was done to increase the coverage and get vaccines to every child,” he added.

 

Gates said the effort to eradicate polio was one of the Foundation’s toughest. A lot was learnt, and partnerships were built with traditional institutions.

He said the Foundation had already rolled out HPB vaccines to reduce the 7,000 annual deaths of women from cervical cancer.

He said a single dose of the vaccine taken by girls ages 9-14 could give them lifetime protection.

“Nigeria achieved a better result than any other country in getting out the vaccine to young girls,” he noted.

Gates told President Tinubu that he was dedicated to cutting malnutrition and spreading vaccines that could end malaria in Nigeria.

“Some of our goals will seem ambitious; for example, in the next twenty years, we hope to eradicate malaria,” he added.

Gates assured the Nigerian leader of his continued commitment to improving health in Nigeria, aiming to invest his entire wealth in this cause in the next 20 years.

Aliko Dangote, the President and Chairman of Dangote Group, the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Hon. Zephaniah Jisalo, executives of the Gates Foundation, and Dr. Ayuba Burki Gufwan,executive secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, attended the ceremony.

 FG Commences Payment of ₦44,000 Arrears to Corps Members

The Federal Government has commenced the disbursement of ₦44,000 in accumulated arrears to members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), fulfilling a long-anticipated pledge under the administration of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu 

The payment represents the balance due to corps members following the upward review of their monthly allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, which was approved to reflect the newly implemented national minimum wage. The arrears cover the eight-month period from July 2024 to February 2025, totaling ₦352,000 per corps member.

This initiative not only benefits serving corps members but also extends to those who recently completed their service within the stated timeframe. The NYSC management confirmed that funds for the payment have been released and that disbursement is already underway.

The move comes in line with the Federal Government's commitment to improving youth welfare and honoring financial obligations, especially to young Nigerians engaged in national service.

Current and former corps members affected by the adjustment are advised to monitor official NYSC platforms for updates and confirmation of payment.
