PRESIDENT TINUBU ASSURES NIGERIANS OF IMPROVED ECONOMY AS HE SIGNS THE HISTORIC N54.99 TRILLION BUDGET OF RESTORATION

 STATEHOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU ASSURES NIGERIANS OF IMPROVED ECONOMY AS HE SIGNS THE HISTORIC N54.99 TRILLION BUDGET OF RESTORATION

President Bola Tinubu said Friday in Abuja that disciplined focus and diligence would be the benchmarks for implementing the historic “2025 Budget of Restoration.”

He said the N54.99 trillion budget, which he signed into law, is based on projected revenues.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbass, and Senate Committee Chairman on Appropriation Sen. Solomon Adeola witnessed the budget signing ceremony.

“Today, we take another bold step in our nation’s journey of economic recovery, stability, and growth with the signing of the 2025 Budget of Restoration. We reaffirm our commitment to securing our future, rebuilding prosperity, and ensuring that every Nigerian shares in the dividends of governance.

“The past year tested our resolve. But through economic discipline and strategic reforms, we achieved what many deemed impossible. After the initial turbulent take-off, our people can see signs of progress and the promise of a better future. Our economy is turning the corner,” the President said.

President Tinubu noted that the uncertainty over the economy was gradually clearing as the reforms took shape, delivering a national GDP growth of 3.86% in the last quarter of 2024, the fastest in three years.

“Revenue increased to N21.6 trillion from N12.37 trillion, reflecting our drive for fiscal efficiency and the deficit reduced significantly—from 6.2% in 2023 to 4.17% in 2025.

“Forex reforms restored investor confidence, stabilising our markets. The minimum wage was raised to ₦70,000, strengthening the purchasing power of workers, and infrastructure development advanced rapidly, with transformative projects such as the 750km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the 1,068km Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway,” the President added.

President Tinubu thanked the leadership and members of the National Assembly for their collaboration in giving the appropriation bill speedy attention and passage.

“We have no dust on our faces or tears in our eyes. We walked together as brothers and sisters. Though the initial outlook was turbulent, we can now see signs of progress,” he stated.

The President urged the legislators to extend the same support for implementing the budget.

The President highlighted some priority areas in the budget, including National Security, Infrastructure and energy, Human Capital Development, healthcare, education, and skills development.

President Tinubu said the increased allocation for agriculture and food security will boost local food production and ensure that no Nigerian goes hungry. Similarly, the enhanced budget for social welfare will support youths, women, and vulnerable citizens.

“This budget is bold, ambitious, and necessary. However, let me be clear: We cannot spend what we do not have.

“While we have significantly reduced the deficit, we must ensure that we back every naira spent with actual revenue. We will not burden future generations with reckless borrowing. Instead, we will expand government revenues through efficiency reforms and enhanced earnings; accelerate public-private partnerships and foreign investments to finance key projects,” he said.

President Tinubu said every government agency would be held accountable for prudent spending and value-for-money initiatives.

“To ensure smooth budget implementation, we will work with the National Assembly to redefine corrigenda within the Appropriations Act.

“The redefinition will establish clear triggers for amendments, balancing executive needs with legislative oversight. A budget is not just numbers—it is a promise, and we must honour it with discipline,” the President added.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, assured the President of the full support of the National Assembly in implementing the budget.

Sen. Akpabio noted that the President inherited a “foaming economy” that needed urgent economic measures to recover.

The Senate President affirmed that President Tinubu’s experience from Lagos and versatility in managing men and resources enabled the economy’s ongoing reforms and turnaround.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, said the passing of the budget had been a collaborative effort based on consultation, negotiation and analysis.

“The National Assembly has all along been partners in progress with you, Mr President,” he added.

STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU ON THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE 2025 RAMADAN FASTING SEASON

STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU ON THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE 2025 RAMADAN FASTING SEASON

I congratulate the Muslim faithful in Nigeria and worldwide as we begin the sacred month of Ramadan.

We are profoundly grateful to Almighty Allah for granting us the grace to witness the commencement of this holy month, a cornerstone of the Islamic faith. May this fasting and devotion period be marked by good health, spiritual fulfilment, and divine blessings.

Ramadan is a time for deep reflection, renewed devotion to Allah, and acts of compassion and generosity toward humanity.

It is a season of spiritual rejuvenation, self-discipline, and empathy for the less fortunate. I urge all Muslims observing the fast to embrace the profound lessons of piety, humility, and selflessness that this holy month embodies. Let us use this period to strengthen our bonds with Allah and one another, fostering unity and peace in our communities.

This year's Ramadan holds special significance as it coincides with a period of renewed hope and progress for our nation. Our administration's bold and transformative policies are beginning to yield positive results, as evidenced by the gradual stabilisation of our economy. The Gross Domestic Product for the last quarter of 2024 showed a marked improvement over the same period in 2023. The once-soaring prices of essential food items are now downward, providing much-needed relief to our fasting population and all Nigerians. The exchange rate is stabilising, and fuel prices are declining, signalling a brighter future.

As the wet season approaches, we remain steadfast in boosting agricultural productivity. We are determined to enhance food production and ensure self-sufficiency and food security for all Nigerians through targeted input support, mechanisation, and innovative farming initiatives. Our resolve to build a resilient and prosperous nation remains unwavering.

In this sacred month, I call on all Nigerians to join hands in prayer and action for our beloved country's continued growth and development. Let us fervently seek Allah's guidance and protection for our nation, and let our words and deeds reflect our shared commitment to peace, unity, and progress.

I extend my heartfelt wishes to all Muslims observing Ramadan for a month filled with joy, peace, and spiritual renewal. May the blessings of this holy month illuminate our hearts and homes, and may we emerge from it as better individuals and a stronger nation.

Ramadan Kareem!

The Federal Government has commenced training for individuals who successfully enrolled in the one-year National Health Fellows Programme, which was created to bring about meaningful change and innovation in the healthcare sector.

While addressing the selected participants from the 774 local government areas of Nigeria, who represent various professional fields, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, urged the youths to view the programme as a gift and a major opportunity granted to them by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR.

"The President is offering this to you as an opportunity. So, what will you do with it? Embrace it wholeheartedly. Build yourselves. Learn valuable skills. You have trainers and mentors who will guide you, especially in primary healthcare. Think deeply about what you are passionate about," he stated.

Professor Pate highlighted that the National Health Fellows Programme demonstrates how the Federal Government is investing in human development, aligning with President Tinubu's Renewed Hope agenda, which aims to bring reforms in the healthcare sector.

He further encouraged the youth participants to view the training as an opportunity to learn and develop good leadership qualities such as honesty, courage, and resilience. The programme will also provide them with the chance to receive mentorship for the development of Nigeria.

After reviewing the training centers in Abuja, Professor Pate remarked:

"These youths are tomorrow’s leaders in the healthcare sector, and they will accelerate the implementation of necessary reforms, promote integrity and trust, while gaining training from experts."

PRESIDENT TINUBU TO AIRTEL CHAIRMAN: "I AM PRO-BUSINESS. NIGERIA NEEDS INVESTORS LIKE YOU TO GROW"

 STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU TO AIRTEL CHAIRMAN: "I AM PRO-BUSINESS. NIGERIA NEEDS INVESTORS LIKE YOU TO GROW"

President Bola Tinubu, Thursday in Abuja, said the telecoms sector's regulatory framework and operations would be reviewed to reflect global best practices, with a greater focus on protecting infrastructure.

President Tinubu spoke at a meeting with an Airtel delegation led by Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal at the State House.

"I am grateful for your openness, readiness, and confidence, which moved us very close to the Prime Minister of India. When he was here, we discussed things at length.

"The entire ecosystem will be further examined, and if there is anything we can copy from India, we are ready to do so. We are prepared to learn. We are not ashamed of copying what is working in other climes.

"It is for the good of all of us, and Nigeria is so critically important that we must give attention to those revolutionary intentions that can make business work. I am pro-business, and I will continue to be that. I can give you that assurance,'' he said.

The President noted that the tax reforms will create a more favourable climate for investors.

"We will find a way to work with tax administrators to ensure that whatever we have to do, we will encourage growth and opportunities. We are ready to do that".

The Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, thanked the President for consistently supporting the telecoms sector's growth.

Tijani said the approval by the President for the protection of fibre optic and undersea cables as critical national assets would further stimulate growth in the industry, assuring that the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) has started implementing and enforcing the law.

The Chairman of Airtel commended the President for the two-pronged economic reforms that had transformed the economy for future growth.

"When you took office, you made some promises. Given the country's situation, I was unsure how deep and far you could take your commitments.

"I am indeed reminded of 1991, when India was in a similar situation, and we were practically on our knees, having pledged 500,000 tons of gold to the Bank of England, and our vessel in Tokyo had been put up for sale.

"During that time, the Prime Minister and his team took similar reforms to what you are taking now in Nigeria, and India has never seen better times after that.

"The duties went down, the rupee was floated, and it depreciated significantly. Relicensing happened, and it was the dawn of a new world in India. We just moved forward,'' he said.

Mittal said the reforms turned India into one of the largest economies in the world.

"I feel that what you have done here is unprecedented in a challenging time. Only people of resolve and steel can endure this huge pressure, floating the naira, which moved from N450 to about N1900 and is now coming back to N1400 to N1500.

"It has been a remarkable achievement celebrated by the entire world. This was much required, and you delivered on your promises,'' the Airtel Chairman told President Tinubu.

He also commended the removal of the petrol subsidy.

"The second one was the removal of subsidy, which was a very tough decision for any politician. It was unpopular and difficult, but you held your position, knowing fully that not doing it would not help the country.

"You have taken a long-term position. It is my belief and hope that you have created a legacy for yourself. Your first term as President will mark a watershed in the development of your country.

"This will be a turning point, and I would like to commend you for having held a firm position and taken the country forward,'' he added.

Mittal said more Nigerians should be encouraged to invest in the country, particularly those with huge financial portfolios abroad.

"I have been speaking to people in Nigeria, friends and business people, and they are all now feeling calm, and when they start to get back, they will move very fast. I have experienced this in India,'' he stated.

PRESIDENT TINUBU RECEIVES NIPSS REPORT ON DIGITAL ECONOMY, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO YOUTH EMPOWERMENT, JOB CREATION

 STATEHOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU RECEIVES NIPSS REPORT ON DIGITAL ECONOMY, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO YOUTH EMPOWERMENT, JOB CREATION

President Bola Tinubu said on Monday in Abuja that the federal government will continue to prioritise the development of the digital economy to enhance youth empowerment and job creation.

The President made the pledge while receiving a report titled "Digital Economy, Youth Empowerment and Sustainable Job Creation in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities," presented by participants of the Senior Executive Course 46 National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru.

In their eight-point recommendation, the course participants urged the Federal government to expedite the enactment of the Digital Economy and e-Governance Bill 2024 and encourage states to waive the Right of Way fees on deployment of telecoms infrastructure.

The 96 participants also recommended that the President issue an Executive Order mandating all MDAs to migrate to the OneGov.ng portal.

They advocated adopting a Quintuple-Helix Model to promote the digital economy, youth empowerment, and sustainable job creation.

Other recommendations were promoting long-term funding for the 3MTT scheme, accelerating the transition from IPv4 to IPv6, establishing Digital Health Innovation Hubs across Nigeria, and developing a preventive maintenance application for the nation's automotive industry.

Responding, President Tinubu directed the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy to coordinate with the group and present their recommendations to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Head of the Civil Service for streamlined implementation.

Emphasising the importance of youth empowerment through innovation and digital skills development, President Tinubu said:

"At the core of our administration is youth empowerment. We cannot relent on that, and we need everyone's collaboration.

"I have listened carefully to your recommendations and the thorough work you did. We will continue to engage the Institute as a resource centre and Think Tank.

"As Nigeria's foremost policy Think-Tank, you have highlighted the overlap of some government agencies, and we'll look at that.

"You are an asset to our country, and I thank the participants for their dedication to their studies. We will continue to collaborate with you for the prosperity of our country."

Highlighting the importance of data in national planning, President Tinubu told the meeting he had earlier met with officials from the National Population Commission (NPC) to discuss the upcoming census.

Prof. Ayo Omotayo, the Director-General of NIPSS, said during the year-long engagement, course participants undertook study tours across Nigeria and abroad, exploring the theme of their study.

"We recognise that in an era where technology drives innovation, Nigeria must aggressively leverage its youthful population to build a thriving ecosystem. The opportunities are boundless, from Fintech to Agri-Tech, E-Commerce to Artificial Intelligence.

"However, systemic challenges such as infrastructural deficits, inadequate digital skills, and regulatory bottlenecks must be addressed.

"Our findings highlight the urgent need for targeted policies that foster an enabling environment for startups, enhance access to finance, and expand broadband penetration.

"We believe that with your administration's continued support, Nigeria will fully unlock the potential of the digital economy and create millions of sustainable jobs for our teeming youth," he said.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced that the Digital Economy Bill, currently before the National Assembly, will undergo public hearings in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) before its passage in the second quarter of 2025.

According to him, this is the first time legislation will be subjected to such an extensive review.

Regarding Right of Way fees, the Minister disclosed that 11 states have responded to the federal government's request to waive the charges, a move aimed at facilitating broadband infrastructure expansion.

He expressed optimism that all states in the Federation would comply with this initiative before the end of the second year of the Tinubu administration.

On Nigeria's progress in internet protocol transition, Tijani stated that the country is on track to become one of the first in Africa to migrate fully from IPv4 to IPv6.

He added that in 2024, the federal government approved a $2 billion investment into 90,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables to ensure nationwide broadband coverage.

This project will have the third-longest fibre network in Africa, following South Africa and Egypt.

According to the Minister, the project has made significant progress, with support from the Ministry of Finance and a $500 million commitment secured by the World Bank.

In his intervention, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, noted that the ICT sector contributed 16% to Nigeria's GDP in 2024.

He emphasised the government's commitment to prioritising the sector as crucial for economic stability and job creation.

He also recalled President Tinubu's recent meeting with the Chief Executive of Flutterwave, during which the company pledged to support Nigerian youth and SMEs through technology-driven solutions with long-term economic impact.

"Flutterwave is considering listing on Nigeria's Stock Exchange, and we expect this to strengthen the tech and payments ecosystem further," he said.

NIGERIA MOVES CLOSER TO FRESH CENSUS, PRESIDENT TINUBU TO SET UP COMMITTEE

NIGERIA MOVES CLOSER TO FRESH CENSUS, PRESIDENT TINUBU TO SET UP COMMITTEE

Nigeria took a step closer today, 24th February 2025 to conducting a new national Population and Housing Census with biometric and digital components. The nation last held a census in 2006.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at a meeting at the State House with officials of the National Population Commission (NPC) led by Chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, said he would set up a committee to align the census budget to the government's present financial realities.

He said the National Identity Management Commission(NIMC) must be part of the review.

"We must ascertain who we are, how many we are, and how to manage our data. Without an accurate census, we can't successfully plan for employment, agriculture, and food sovereignty. So many problems come up without accurate data", President Tinubu said.

He reiterated his commitment to ensuring accurate and reliable figures from the national census to strengthen development planning and improve Nigerians' living conditions through more efficient social security.

The NPC Chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, and some other members briefed the President.

President Tinubu noted that government incentives, such as the sale and distribution of fertilisers, could be easily improved with more reliable data and demographics.

The President told the delegation that biometric capturing should be central to the process, with multiple identification features, including facial and voice recognition.

"We should work on our financial muscle well in place to lift our burden before we go and meet development partners for the census. We should work out the figures before discussing the role of development partners.

"This stop-and-go activity on the census cannot work with me. So we better have a definite path. I will set up a committee for you to look at the issues critically and do a source and application of resources. Where can we get help, and what can we lift before we embark on proclamation?

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Sen. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, said the census data would be central to future planning and resource distribution.

"At a retreat for the ministers in 2023, Mr President, you reiterated your commitment to the census, so there is no doubt about your desire and commitment to have the census. In fact, at the last Federal Executive Council meeting, you asked me what the problem was, and I told you it was simply an issue of lack of ability to fund the census.

"Even today, before this meeting, I called the NPC Chairman and restated your commitment to the census. However, the Commission and all of us in the team need to agree on the minimum amount we can source to support Mr. President in making the final decision.

"The NPC indicated that 40 per cent of the funding for the 2006 census came from development partners," Bagudu stated.

Bagudu noted that the enumeration done by NPC so far has been helpful.

"Mr President, we have been having ecosystem meetings to link the identity agencies, even the geo-spatial chaired by the ministry, because of our mandate as the supervising ministry of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). So the NPC, NBS, NIMC, Ministry Of Digital Economy, passport, social register, voters register, and even telecoms data have been meeting with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) to see how much is available to the government regarding data and how much optimisation can take place."

In his presentation, NPC chairman Kwarra said the last census took place in 2006, and 19 years later, the figures were no longer relevant in planning, particularly for key sectors that directly impact the population.

He said 760,000 tablets had been acquired and stored with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), assuring the Commission would engage with development partners to seek support whenever President Tinubu proclaimed the new census.

Nigerian Senate's Summoning of Ahmad Isa Sparks Controversy

Nigerian Senate's Summoning of Ahmad Isa Sparks Controversy

In a move that has ignited widespread debate, the Nigerian Senate has summoned Ahmad Isa, popularly known as the Ordinary President of Brekete Family, to appear before them on February 27, 2025. The summons follows an episode of his radio show where Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan discussed her personal issues with him.

The Senate's directive has been met with criticism, as many view it as an attempt to muzzle Isa and the Brekete Family, a renowned human rights advocacy platform. The Senate's warning that Isa could be considered a criminal if he fails to comply has been deemed excessive by some, raising concerns about freedom of speech and the media.

Isa's work on Brekete Family has earned him significant recognition, including an honorary doctorate from the Federal University Lokoja.

The platform is widely regarded as a beacon of hope for Nigerians seeking justice and human rights protection.

This development has sparked a national conversation about the role of media in holding public figures accountable and the limits of legislative power.

As the situation unfolds, many are watching closely to see how this will impact the broader landscape of media freedom and human rights advocacy in Nigeria.

AU ENDORSES NIGERIA AS AfCFTA DIGITAL TRADE CHAMPION

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

AU ENDORSES NIGERIA AS  AfCFTA DIGITAL TRADE CHAMPION

The African Union (AU) has endorsed Nigeria as the Digital Trade Champion for the continent under the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) Digital Trade protocol, following the impressive record of the Federal Government in promoting digital enterprise and innovation.

The 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, which concluded on Sunday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, recognised Nigeria's proactive role in advancing the implementation of the digital trade protocol adopted in February 2024.

The protocol features an agenda to develop eight annexes covering critical areas, including rules of origin, digital identities, cross-border data transfers, legitimate and legal public interest reasons for disclosing source code, online safety and security, emerging and advanced technologies, and financial technology.

In his annual report on the progress of the AfCFTA's digital trade protocol, former president of Niger Republic and AU AfCFTA champion Mahamadou Issoufou lauded Nigeria's leadership for convening the Digital Economy Roundtable in January.

He noted that the gathering was pivotal in driving the digital trade agenda forward.

''No organisation, region, or continent has negotiated or adopted such a comprehensive legal instrument on digital trade, positioning the African continent to benefit from the digital economy for innovation and job creation,'' former President Issoufou said.

The former Nigerien leader observed that young Africans are leaders in digital innovation, particularly in mobile banking and other digitally enabled services.

''The AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade will establish a conducive environment for these young people to fully participate in Africa's digital economy,'' he added.

Reflecting on the Digital Economy Roundtable in Abuja, Issoufou commended President Bola Tinubu and his administration for convening the event and inviting the AfCFTA Secretariat to participate.

''The Roundtable was attended by young pioneers in Fintech, mobile banking and other areas of the digital economy.

''It was evident from the discussions that young people are eager to take advantage of Africa's digital economy through the AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade,'' the former Niger president said in his progress report to the 38th Assembly.

On the significance of the AU endorsement of Nigeria, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, told the summit:

"Africa has demonstrated global leadership by pioneering the first-of-its-kind AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade—establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework.

"The Assembly of Heads of State and Government has officially designated Nigeria as AfCFTA Digital Trade Champion. The AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol is a game changer in advancing Africa's economic development. It is set to create millions of jobs for Africa's growing, tech-savvy youth, contribute billions to the continent's GDP and attract substantial investments for public digital infrastructure across African nations."

The courtesy visit aimed to congratulate Sen. Umeh on his recent appointment and discuss collaborative efforts to ensure the successful conduct of NPC activities, particularly the upcoming Population and Housing Census.

Recall that Sen. Victor Umeh succeeded Sen. Abdul Ahmed Ningi as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Identity Card and Population following a minor reshuffle of various committees' leadership announced by the Senate President, Sen. Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON earlier this month.

Senator Umeh warmly welcomed the NPC delegation and underscored the critical importance of obtaining accurate population figures and characteristics. He stated, “Reliable data is essential for the effective distribution of palliative initiatives,” referencing the challenges that arise from inaccurate demographic information.

Highlighting a transformative approach for the upcoming census, Sen. Umeh assured the NPC team of the Senate's support. “Unlike previous censuses, the deployment of modern technology and biometric features in the upcoming Census will streamline processes, enhance data accuracy and ensure credible outcomes,” he said.

Sen. Umeh further pledged his commitment to facilitating a meeting between the NPC and the Senate President, aiming to engage President Bola Tinubu to officially proclaim the census date. “The Senate President is committed to supporting the NPC, and I will advocate for the necessary discussions to ensure we move forward swiftly,” he added.

During the meeting, the NPC Chairman, Hon. Kwarra briefed Sen. Umeh on the NPC’s mandate and the current status of preparations for the census. He called for the backing of the National Assembly to secure timely and effective execution of Nigeria's first biometric census.

Accompanying Hon. Kwarra were key NPC officials, including Federal Commissioner for Anambra State, Hon. Chidi Christopher Ezeoke, mni; Federal Commissioner for Taraba State, Hon. Sule Saany Sale; Federal Commissioner for Edo State, Dr. Tony Aiyejina; Federal Commissioner, Ebonyi State, Dr. Jeremiah Ogbonna Nwankwagu; Director-General, Dr. Osifo Tellson Ojogun; Director Census Department, Dr. Inuwa Jalingo; Director Account Department, Hajia Zainab Agbaje; Census Manager, Mrs. Titilayo Hammed; Deputy Director/Protocol to Chairman, Mr. Azeez Amoo and other senior staff.

Their collective presence underscores the NPC's dedication to ensuring that the upcoming census is not only a historic milestone but also a cornerstone for evidence-based planning in Nigeria.

As Nigeria stands on the brink of this pivotal census, the collaboration between the NPC and the Senate Committee signals a promising step toward accurate and reliable demographic data essential for national development.

As part of its efforts to address economic challenges and promote development, the government has launched a program to provide a monthly stipend of N50,000 to 10,000 youths in the country.

This initiative, announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, is part of President Bola Tinubu's broader strategy to alleviate hardships and foster growth in the Niger Delta.

The program is being implemented through the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and is designed to improve the skills of the beneficiaries.

The stipend is set to last for an initial period of 12 months, with the possibility of extension based on the program's success.

In addition to this financial support, the government has also initiated several infrastructure projects in the region, including the commencement of the Lagos to Calabar coastal highway, which is expected to create thousands of jobs for local youths.

The NDDC has been working closely with various stakeholders, including the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce, to support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and ensure the sustainability of youth development programs in the country.

This move is seen as a positive step towards addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by the Niger Delta region and is part of a broader commitment by the Federal Government to develop the area.

The Federal Government has announced a postponement in the implementation of the revised basic education curriculum, shifting its rollout from January 2025 to September 2025.

This decision was made public by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during a press conference in Abuja.

The postponement is aimed at ensuring that all necessary preparations are in place before the new curriculum is introduced.

These preparations include training teachers, setting up classrooms, and preparing teachers' guides for the effective implementation of the curriculum.

The revised curriculum is designed to be competency and outcome-based, aligning with the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) initiative.

It includes the introduction of 15 vocational skills such as plumbing, robotics, beekeeping, hairstyling, and solar installation, among others.

The goal is to equip students with practical skills that will prepare them for the challenges of the 21st century and enhance their employability.

Additionally, the government plans to phase out the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), also known as 'Junior WAEC', as part of its broader education reform.

This move is intended to ensure that students have uninterrupted education from primary to senior secondary school, thereby improving their educational outcomes and societal contributions.

The Federal Government is committed to enhancing the quality of education in Nigeria and is working closely with stakeholders to ensure the success of this initiative.

Fed Govt advocates shift in education system from 6-3-3-4- to 12-4 year model

Fed Govt advocates shift in education system from 6-3-3-4- to 12-4 year model

Tunji Alausa

A policy shift in Nigeria’s education model is underway, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa has hinted.

He said the Federal Government plans a shift from the 6-3-3-4 system to a 12-4 year education model.

The proposal, the minister said, would be considered at the extra-ordinary National Council on Education (NCE) – a meeting of the highest policy making body – holding in Abuja.

Nigeria operates the 6-3-3-4 system, which consists of nine years of basic education, three years of senior secondary education and four years of tertiary education.

However, Alausa pointed out that some of the issues influencing the convening of the extra-ordinary NCE meeting include the introduction of a 12-year basic education system in Nigeria’s education framework and the approval of a national policy on bullying, among others.

Alausa said: “It is important to acknowledge that while the 9-3-4 system of education has its merits, it also has drawbacks, such as the need for students to work in order to further their education.

“It is therefore prudent to transition from the 6-3-3-4 to the 12-4 system of education. By doing so, Nigeria will align with global standards in preparing students for better tertiary education.

“A 12-year basic education model will ensure a continuous, uninterrupted curriculum, promoting better standardization and fostering quality assurance in the education system.

“It will also guarantee that students receive a more comprehensive and continuous learning experience, improve educational outcomes, and contribute to a more educated populace that drives Nigeria’s economic development.

“A second key agenda to be discussed today at the extraordinary meeting is the conversion of federal science and technical colleges into federal technical colleges.”

He also said that the Council would be discussing the 16-year age-limit policy on admission into tertiary institutions, which is to be incorporated into the national policy on education.

President Tinubu increases 2025 budget proposal from N49.7 trillion to N54.2 trillion

  • Akpabio assures budget passage before February ends

By Adesuwa Tsan, Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has officially notified the Senate of an increase in the proposed 2025 Appropriation Bill from N49.7 trillion to N54.2 trillion, following the discovery of an additional N4.53 trillion in revenue.

The President communicated this adjustment in separate letters to both chambers of the National Assembly. The letters were read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday.

The increase, he explained, was due to additional revenues generated by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) (N1.4 trillion), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) (N1.2 trillion), and other Government-Owned Enterprises (GOEs) (N1.8 trillion).

Ruling on the matter, Akpabio referred the letter to the Senate Committee on Appropriations and directed them to expedite the necessary adjustments to the budget, which is currently under review. He assured that the budget would be passed before the end of February to ensure smooth government operations.

A breakdown of the proposal shows N4.53 trillion allocated to key sectors to drive economic diversification, infrastructure development, and national security. The Solid Minerals sector was allocated N1 trillion “to unlock Nigeria’s vast mineral resources, reduce reliance on oil, and create alternative revenue streams.”

The Bank of Agriculture Recapitalisation received N1.5 trillion to enhance food security, empower smallholder farmers, and promote agro-industrial value chains, while the Bank of Industry Recapitalisation was allocated N500 billion to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs), boost local manufacturing, and reduce import dependence.

Infrastructure Development was allocated N1.5 trillion, while Irrigation Development received N380 billion to support year-round farming and ensure water security.

For transportation infrastructure, N700 billion was allocated, including N300 billion for roads and N400 billion for urban rail networks. Border Communities Infrastructure received N50 billion to enhance security and foster economic development.

On security, Military Barracks Accommodation was allocated N250 billion to improve housing for security personnel, while Military Aviation was proposed N120 billion to modernise Nigeria’s military air capabilities.

President Tinubu justified the allocations to the military, stating that no progress can be made without security. He emphasised that investing in the armed forces was a moral and economic necessity, as national security remains the foundation of economic stability and development.

He urged the National Assembly to adopt and integrate the revised budget proposal, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth, economic diversification, and national security.
